As a therapist for over twenty years, I’ve seen the devastating effects that caregiving can have on people, especially when they are not taking care of themselves. I experienced this first-hand during my own caregiving journey. While caring for my grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease, I felt burdened, exhausted, guilty, resentful, and stressed out. I didn’t reach out for help when I needed it because I was afraid of being judged as weak, incapable or incompetent. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Eventually my lack of self-care led to burnout. In the decade since my own personal caregiving experience, I have seen many clients, friends, and family members struggle with similar issues as they provide care for a loved one, whether it be a parent, child, spouse, or friend.
